Health and Safety
Health and safety is of the utmost importance to Biochemica and our staff. We are dedicated to ensuring the highest standards on behalf of our clients, their stakeholders and the environments we work within.
We are registered with the world’s most recognised occupational health and safety management systems standard, OHSAS 18001 in relation to Water Management Projects. Biochemica is also accredited by safecontractor and the Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme (CHAS), and therefore meets the health and safety training requirements set by each professional body.
Our Health and Safety Policy sets out the structure and strategy of our Health and Safety management system and is designed to show our identified Health and Safety objectives and legal requirements, the methodology we have adopted for risk assessments and our measurable continuous improvement targets. A health and safety programme of action forms part of the Policy, which enables the meeting of our objectives and is reviewed as part of our internal audit plan. Internal audits are carried out regularly and are also used to verify our compliance with applicable legal requirements, as well as determine methods of continuous improvement. External audits are carried out annually by the British Assessment Bureau as part of OHSAS 18001 requirements.
In addition, we have developed a bespoke code of safe working practice, the ‘Biochemica 7 Golden Rules of Safety’, covering incident reporting, driving and vehicles, manual handling, chemical handling, housekeeping, safe behaviours and hazard awareness. It is a requirement for all Biochemica employees to adhere to these rules. Together, through the application of this code, and embedding our own safety culture across Biochemica by means of ongoing training and attainment / renewal of qualifications, we strive to achieve our goal of zero injuries.

Environment
Biochemica accepts that it has a responsibility to the principles of sustainability and environmental awareness as summarised by the ISO 14001 standard, of which our Environmental Policy and management system is certified in relation to Water Management Projects. This certification is accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).
Our environmental objectives are relevant to the water industry as we strive to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions in a bid to tackle climate change, an issue that encompasses the use of water – one of the world’s most precious resources and the commodity that our business is centred around.
Biochemica recognises the social and economic importance of protecting the environment and we are prepared to lead by example in promoting a sensitive, considered attitude to our employees, clients and other stakeholders. Our Policy is reviewed regularly to allow for continuous improvement through internal audits and externally audited by the British Assessment Bureau to ensure compliance.
Biochemica’s Environmental Review document describes our environmental management system and outlines our plans and responsibilities for identifying and addressing our environmental issues in the form of our Environmental Action Plan. The Review is designed to show all our identified environmental Aspects and Impacts, the methodology we have adopted for determining the significance of the Aspects/Impacts, our Objectives and our defined and measurable Targets.
We have conducted a full review of all potential environmental Aspects, their potential Impact on the environment and discussed at management level how these might be addressed. The Aspects and potential Impacts identified were then assessed for ‘Significance’ within our work environment. We have awarded each of our Aspects a rating based on an assessment made according to our Significance Scale and applied relevant controls.
The responsibility for our environmental management system is shared by all Biochemica employees and overseen by our dedicated Environmental Committee.
Our environmental awareness extends to our specialist water and wastewater treatment products and services through our exclusive Ecochemica portfolio as we endeavour to address and promote sustainability.
