Biochemica has been asked to help reduce sludge disposal costs at a large dairy site. The cost savings were two fold; reduction in tankering costs and improved centrifuge/decanter performance, through reduced polymer consumption.
Following polymer screening for the centrifuge application, the best product was chosen and run on a large scale trial. Dry solids improved by 10% and polymer consumption was reduced over the incumbent product.
Biochemica has an extensive range of antifoams and defoamers at their disposal which have been utilised to solve some foaming issues across a variety of industries.
Foam can cause serious issues to an industrial process as well as generally being unsightly. A recent case at a food processor had flooding issues as a direct result of foam. The application of the right product implemented by Biochemica prevented false readings from ultra sonic level probes.

Some of the Biochemica management team attended the glamorous award ceremony at a County Durham hotel and although not triumphant on this occasion, the company has already lifted similar awards for their patent pending technology in 2011.
Biochemica UK Ltd has successfully renewed its tenure with one of its multi-national pharmaceutical clients for an additional three years, while having also been awarded a new water treatment contract at the groups’ remaining site.
Each contract will see Biochemica provide water treatment chemicals and ongoing technical service as part of its total water management approach. Cooling water treatment, boiler water treatment and engineering works are covered under the remit as well the servicing and maintenance of water softeners and Legionella control.
Biochemica has been successful in its bid to win a water treatment contract at a leading plastics and chemical manufacturer.
The contract comprises of the supply of cooling water treatment chemicals and bi-monthly service visits. As part of the contract, cooling towers will be cleaned and engineering upgrades to dosing equipment will be covered.
Biochemica UK Ltd has been awarded an Innovation Award at the recent NE Business awards at Teesside University for its unique foam cleaning technology.
The cleaning technology, which is currently going through the patent process, has significant advantages in terms of Legionella prevention, operator safety and cost benefits. Full scale trials have been performed and the technology is currently being used successfully across a number of large industrial sites in the UK.
Biochemica was approached to improve the performance of a centrifuge (decanter) in a mineral processing application. The percentage dry solids from the process was critical to the operation.
After an initial site survey to understand the process, Biochemica selected a number of specialised polymers for screening. The best product versus the incumbent can be seen below (Fig 1: y-axis CST, secs; x-axis Polymer dose 0.2%, mls. Biochemica polymer in green versus incumbent in blue). The Biochemica polymer outperformed the current product, offering improved performance even at very low dose rates. Based on this study, a full scale trial was commissioned where the results seen in test work were replicated.
Biochemica UK Ltd has recently added to its extensive customer base by further increasing their presence in the food sector. Our total water management philosophy has already allowed many customers to realise cost savings through improved water treatment.
The washing of vegetables produces waste water high in solids and organics. As successfully implemented at many other sites, Biochemica initially provided a suitable water treatment programme to improve the primary settlement of this effluent, as can be seen below (Fig 1).
