One of the youngest employees at the North East’s largest independent water treatment company, Biochemica UK Ltd is seeing double after receiving two awards from Hartlepool Sixth Form College.

19 year old Trainee Service Chemist, Matt Setterfield was awarded with not one but two accolades from his former college in recognition of his achievements.

Matt, who hails from Elwick Village, scored the highest mark in his year for his Chemistry A Level and as a result was awarded a Prize for Achievement at a celebration ceremony at the College. Having shown significant dedication and commitment throughout his studies, Matt also received a Principal Added Prize. Both awards were handed out by Newcastle Falcons Rugby Club player, Matt Fitzpatrick at the annual event.

After completing his A Levels, Matt decided to take a year out before continuing his education. Instead, Matt proactively approached Teesside-based Biochemica to undertake a work placement and gain hands-on water management and chemical industry experience.

Following his third week at Biochemica, staff were so impressed with the attitude and skills Matt demonstrated that he was offered a permanent position as a Trainee Service Chemist.

Managing Director at Biochemica, Dave Ruddy said: “Biochemica is dedicated to supporting the region’s young talent; after all, they are the future leaders of the North East process industry. In order to nurture our up-and-coming engineers and chemists, we offer a strong work placement programme to people like Matt to help them learn about what it’s like to work in the industry and gain a deeper understanding of processes by putting theory into practice.

“Many of our former work placement students have gone on to secure permanent roles with us and join our highly experienced team, and Matt is a perfect example of the quality of people Biochemica is proud to employ. He is bright, enthusiastic and willing to face challenges head on – all of which are characteristics that will stand him in great stead for the future.”

Matt hopes to continue working at Biochemica when he starts Newcastle University next year, where he will study a degree in Chemistry.

Dave added: “We are delighted for Matt and applaud him for his achievements. We have no doubt that there is an exciting career ahead of him in the chemical industry.”
